Analysis of Low-Value Health Services in the Minnesota All Payer Claims Database
May 2017The Minnesota Department of Health analyzed the overuse of unnecessary or low-value care throughout the state of Minnesota using data from the MN APCD. The report looks at 18 low-value services that fall into two major categories, diagnostic imaging and disease screening, and observe the occurrence and cost of each service. This study found that $54.9 million of healthcare spending in Minnesota is accounted for in these 18 low-value services studied in this brief. Researchers hope to inspire others to converse and collaborate on this topic in order to move away from and cut costs to low-value health services, to achieve a more value based, patient centered system of care.
